Bleeding gums could be the first sign of gum disease–gingivitis.  The mouth contains a large number of micro organisms that can cause disease.  The causes of swollen gums may be : mechanical damage, poor oral hygiene, various chronic diseases  such as diabetes, endocrine disorders.  Bleeding gums have been linked to heart conditions.  If left untreated, it can lead to shrinking gums, loss of bone surrounding teeth, looseness of teeth, gum infections and pus discharge, bad breath and finally loss of teeth.

Healthy gums are just as important as healthy teeth.  There can’t be one without another.  So if you have noticed  bleeding when brushing, be sure to contact your dentist at the earliest opportunity.   At Caulfield South dental surgery, our team will conduct a comprehensive diagnosis of the oral cavity, and select the most effective gum treatment for your gums.

What are the treatment for gum disease?

For early stages of gum disease, one may only need regular scaling and cleaning of the teeth, and followed by daily brushing and flossing.  Gingivitis is fully reversible.  However, if disease progresses ,and bone loss has occurred,  the lost tissue cannot be regenerated easily.  A deep cleaning procedure may be indicated,  sometimes in conjunction with antibiotic treatment.  In certain cases, surgery may be needed.
